How to use the MET Activity Energy Estimate Calculator

Estimate activity energy from a supplied metabolic equivalent and duration. The usual oxygen-based convention approximates 3.5 mL oxygen per kg per minute at one MET and five kcal per liter of oxygen.

The calculation

Gross kcal ≈ MET × 3.5 × weight_kg / 200 × minutes; above-rest estimate replaces MET by MET−1

Worked example

70 kg, five METs and 30 minutes give about 183.75 gross kcal, including 36.75 kcal attributed to rest under this convention.

Assumptions and limits

Adult population estimate, not measured metabolism or a food restriction target. Fitness, body composition, movement efficiency and the true activity MET can change expenditure; gross and above-rest values differ.
