How to use the Trailing Moving Average Calculator
Keep the observations in their intended order. The first result appears only once a full window is available. The downloaded series identifies the index of the last observation included in each average.
The calculation
Trailing average at index t = sum of the most recent window values / window length
Worked example
For 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 with a three-point window, the complete trailing averages are 20, 30 and 40.
Assumptions and limits
Equal observation spacing and weight are assumed. No dates are inserted, missing periods filled, trend forecast generated or centered moving average computed.
Common questions
Does the calculator sort the values?
No. Sorting would destroy the time order needed for this calculation.
Why are there fewer outputs than inputs?
The first window−1 observations do not yet have a complete trailing window.
