How to use the Ratio Calculator
Use the same measurement unit for both quantities when the ratio represents a split. Dividing both sides by their greatest common divisor gives a compact whole-number expression without changing the relationship. The share percentages describe a partition of the combined total; a ratio of 3:2 does not mean that the first share is 150% of the whole.
The calculation
Worked example
120:80 reduces to 3:2. The first part represents 60% of the combined quantity and the second represents 40%.
Assumptions and limits
Inputs are non-negative whole numbers and at least one must be positive. A zero side is permitted, such as 0:5 reducing to 0:1. Both zero would provide no meaningful proportion. Decimal quantities can be multiplied by a common power of ten before entry, provided the resulting integers remain within the supported range.
Common questions
How do I simplify 1.5:2.5?
Multiply both by 10 to enter 15:25. The calculator returns 3:5.
Is 3:2 the same as 60:40?
Yes. Both describe the same relative quantities, because multiplying both sides by the same positive number preserves the ratio.
