How to use the Weighted Population Variance Calculator

Weights are positive relative weights and need not sum to one. The denominator is total weight, so this is a population-style weighted moment.

The calculation

Mean = Σwx/Σw; variance = Σw(x−mean)²/Σw

Worked example

Values 10,20,30 with weights 1,2,1 have mean 20, variance 50 and standard deviation about 7.0711.

Assumptions and limits

Does not apply an unbiased sample correction, infer frequency weights or handle complex survey designs. Different weight interpretations can require different estimators.
