How to use the Auto Loan Calculator

Keep the vehicle price separate from your down payment and trade-in. Trade-in equity is the vehicle’s value minus the balance still owed on it, so a trade-in with an outstanding loan does not reduce borrowing by its full value. Choose the tax-base convention that applies to your transaction. This tool then uses the same fixed-rate monthly-payment method as the Loan Calculator and provides a repayment schedule.

The calculation

Financed amount = price + tax + fees + trade-in balance − cash down − trade-in value

Worked example

A $30,000 car, $5,000 cash down, a $3,000 trade-in with $1,000 owed, $500 fees and 8% tax on the $27,000 post-trade-in price produces a $25,660 loan.

Assumptions and limits

The tax rate and trade-in credit are assumptions supplied by you. State, local and dealer rules are not looked up. All fees entered here are assumed to be financed, and the old vehicle’s remaining loan is rolled into the calculation. Insurance, registration renewals, interest-rate changes and balloon payments are excluded. A purchase covered by cash and equity returns a zero loan instead of a negative payment.

Common questions

Does a trade-in remove its old loan?

The entered amount owed is included in the financed amount. Only net equity reduces the cost you need to cover.

Is the tax setting valid everywhere?

No. Some jurisdictions permit a trade-in credit and others do not. Check your transaction and choose the appropriate assumption.
