How to use the Retirement Funding Scenario Calculator

Model annual spending after other income with equal withdrawals at year ends. Use a real, inflation-adjusted return and spending in constant purchasing-power dollars so inflation is not counted twice.

The calculation

Required starting fund = annual shortfall × [1−(1+r)^−n]/r; at r=0 use shortfall×n

Worked example

$40,000 annual spending minus $10,000 other income for 30 years at 0% real return requires $900,000, leaving a $400,000 gap against $500,000 available.

Assumptions and limits

A deterministic funding scenario, not a safe withdrawal recommendation. Market sequence risk, longevity uncertainty, taxes and changing income are excluded.
