How to use the Project Quote Calculator
Use an internal cost rate for labor rather than a selling rate that already includes markup. The contingency increases the cost base first, and the markup is then applied to that adjusted base.
The calculation
Quote = (hours × labor cost + materials + other) × (1+contingency) × (1+markup)
Worked example
$1,600 base cost with 10% contingency becomes $1,760; adding 20% markup gives a $2,112 pre-tax quote.
Assumptions and limits
Markup is not profit margin. Scope changes, tax, subcontractor terms and collection risk are not inferred. The result is an estimate, not a binding proposal or contract.
Common questions
Is 20% markup a 20% margin?
No. Margin divides profit by revenue rather than cost.
Should I include tax in other costs?
Use a consistent costing basis. This page does not calculate a sales-tax obligation.
