How to use the Budget vs Actual Profit Calculator

Use the same accounting period, currency and cost scope for actual and budget. Cost variance is displayed as budget cost minus actual cost so a positive value improves profit.

The calculation

Profit variance = (actual revenue−actual costs) − (budget revenue−budget costs)

Worked example

Budget profit $3,000 and actual profit $4,000 produce a favorable $1,000 variance.

Assumptions and limits

Does not allocate variance to prices, volume, exchange rates or accounting adjustments. The inputs must already be comparable.
