How to use the Discount Calculator

Successive percentage discounts apply to the price remaining after the previous discount. This is why two discounts should not simply be added. Enter zero for the second discount when only one reduction applies. The result shows the discounted subtotal, savings before tax, combined effective discount and the tax added at the end.

The calculation

Subtotal = price × (1−discount1) × (1−discount2); total = subtotal × (1+tax)

Worked example

A $100 item reduced by 20%, then another 10%, costs $72 before tax. At 8% tax after discounts, the final total is $77.76. The effective discount is 28%, not 30%.

Assumptions and limits

This assumes both discounts apply sequentially and tax is assessed on the discounted subtotal. Coupon restrictions, minimum spends, shipping and local tax rules can differ. Dollar-off coupons are not included. A 100% discount leaves a zero subtotal under this model, and a tax calculation is not an authoritative transaction quote.

Common questions

Are 20% and 10% discounts a 30% discount?

No. The remaining-price factors are 0.8 and 0.9, giving 0.72 of the original price and a 28% effective discount.

Can I ignore tax?

Yes. Set the tax rate to zero to compare the discounted prices only.
