How to use the PCM Audio File Size Calculator

Choose the sample representation used by the file. Every channel stores a sample at each sample time, so adding channels increases payload proportionally. This tool describes uncompressed PCM rather than a compressed audio codec.

The calculation

Bytes = sample rate × bits/sample / 8 × channels × seconds

Worked example

60 seconds of 48 kHz, 24-bit stereo PCM has a 17.28 MB payload before headers.

Assumptions and limits

Headers, metadata, container padding and implementation-specific sample storage are omitted. Formats storing 24-bit samples in 32-bit words need a corresponding storage-width assumption.

Common questions

Can I estimate MP3 size here?

Use its encoded bitrate rather than PCM sample dimensions; this tool models uncompressed audio.

Does stereo double mono payload?

At identical sample rate and bit depth, yes: it stores two channels instead of one.
