How to use the Video Recording Storage Calculator
Use the actual encoded video bitrate rather than raw sensor resolution. Specify recording hours separately from retention days, so continuous and scheduled recording can be compared.
The calculation
GB = bitrate(Mbit/s) × 1,000,000 / 8 × hours × 3,600 × days × cameras / 1,000,000,000
Worked example
Four cameras recording at 8 Mbit/s for 24 hours a day over 30 days produce about 10,368 GB of video payload.
Assumptions and limits
Assumes constant bitrate. Audio tracks, variable-bitrate peaks, filesystem overhead, redundant storage and event-trigger uncertainty are excluded. GB and TB are decimal units, not GiB and TiB.
Common questions
Does resolution alone determine storage?
No. Codec settings and encoded bitrate strongly affect file size.
Are megabits and megabytes the same?
No. Eight bits make a byte; the conversion divides by eight.
