How to use the EV Charging Time Calculator

Use usable battery capacity and an average power appropriate to the charge interval. The charger energy row distinguishes grid-side energy from energy added to the battery.

The calculation

Time = capacity × (target%−start%) / (input power × efficiency)

Worked example

A 60 kWh battery going from 20% to 80% needs 36 kWh added. At 7.2 kW input and 90% efficiency, the constant-power estimate is 5.5556 hours.

Assumptions and limits

High-charge tapering, thermal control, shared chargers and vehicle power limits can alter the average. Starting and target percentages do not determine a real charge curve, so this is not a guaranteed completion time.

Common questions

Can I enter the charger’s advertised peak power?

Only if that reasonably represents average input over the interval; a peak often overestimates sustained power.

Why is charger energy larger than battery energy?

An efficiency below 100% accounts for part of the input energy not becoming stored battery energy.
