How to use the Average Speed Calculator
Use the distance traveled and total elapsed time for the interval you want to describe. Include stops if you want a whole-trip average, or exclude them if you explicitly want a moving-time average. Decimal hours are not clock notation: 1.5 hours is one hour thirty minutes. The calculator converts the same average speed to km/h, mph and m/s.
The calculation
Worked example
Traveling 100 km in two hours gives an average of 50 km/h, approximately 31.0686 mph or 13.8889 m/s.
Assumptions and limits
Elapsed time must be positive and distance non-negative. Average speed cannot reveal acceleration, peak speed or the time spent stationary. It is distance along the traveled path rather than displacement used for vector velocity. The tool does not infer distance from a map or decide whether a speed is lawful or safe for a particular route.
Common questions
How do I enter 30 minutes?
Use 0.5 decimal hours. Divide minutes by 60 to convert them.
Should I include breaks?
Include them for the average over the complete journey, or omit them for a deliberately defined moving-time interval.
