How to use the Streaming Bitrate Budget Calculator

Reserve is a percentage of the link capacity, while overhead is a percentage added on top of payload. All streams are assumed to share the remaining capacity equally.

The calculation

Payload Mbps per stream = capacity × (1−reserve/100) / [(1+overhead/100) × stream count]

Worked example

100 Mbps, 20% reserved, 10% overhead and four equal streams give about 18.1818 Mbps payload per stream.

Assumptions and limits

This is capacity allocation, not codec quality selection or a network guarantee. Variable bitrate peaks, retransmissions and wireless fluctuations may need additional headroom.

Common questions

Which inputs should I use?
