How to use the Tank Fill and Drain Time Calculator

Use constant simultaneous flow rates and a target no lower than the current volume. If the target already equals the current volume, elapsed time is zero.

The calculation

Time = (target volume − current volume)/(inflow−outflow)

Worked example

Raising a tank from 100 L to 1,000 L with 30 L/min inflow and 10 L/min outflow takes 45 minutes.

Assumptions and limits

Does not assess tank capacity or overflow protection. Variable pressure, changing outflow head, leaks and interrupted pumps can change the actual time.

Common questions

Which inputs should I use?

What does the result exclude?
