How to use the Unit Converter

Choose a quantity before selecting the source and target units. Length, mass, volume and speed use fixed scale factors; temperature also requires an offset. The tool keeps US and imperial gallons separate and distinguishes ounces of mass from US fluid ounces of volume. Your selection changes the available units so incompatible dimensions cannot be converted directly.

The calculation

Base value = value × source factor + source offset; output = (base − target offset) / target factor

Worked example

1 meter is approximately 3.280839895 feet. 0°C is 32°F, and 1 US gallon is 3.785411784 liters.

Assumptions and limits

This is a unit conversion, not a conversion between different physical quantities. Converting liters to kilograms requires a density that this tool does not assume. Mass, volume and length inputs must be non-negative; signed speed values are permitted. Temperatures below absolute zero are rejected. The fixed factors do not adjust for material temperature, calibration or measurement uncertainty.

Common questions

Why are US and imperial gallons different?

They use different definitions: a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters and an imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters.

Can I convert kilograms to liters?

Not without knowing the material’s density. Select compatible units within the same quantity instead.
