How to use the Heat Pump Heating Cost Calculator

Use a measured or appropriate period-average COP for the temperatures and operation being modeled. COP is a dimensionless heat-output-to-electricity-input ratio.

The calculation

Electrical energy = useful heat/COP; cost = electrical energy × entered rate

Worked example

1,000 kWh of useful heat at COP 3 and $0.20/kWh costs about $66.67, compared with $200 for ideal resistance heating.

Assumptions and limits

No seasonal efficiency is inferred from a single operating-point COP. Auxiliary heating, defrost, pumps, installation costs and changing weather are excluded unless reflected in the entered COP.

Common questions

Which inputs should I use?

Use a measured or appropriate period-average COP for the temperatures and operation being modeled. COP is a dimensionless heat-output-to-electricity-input ratio.

What does the result exclude?

No seasonal efficiency is inferred from a single operating-point COP. Auxiliary heating, defrost, pumps, installation costs and changing weather are excluded unless reflected in the entered COP.
