How to use the EV vs Gas Energy Cost Calculator
Use grid energy consumption for the EV so charging losses are included in that assumption. Apply comparable driving conditions and the prices you expect to pay.
The calculation
Annual energy cost = annual distance/100 × consumption per 100 km × price per energy unit
Worked example
For 15,000 km, 18 kWh/100 km at $0.20/kWh costs $540. At 7 L/100 km and $1.50/L, gasoline costs $1,575: a $1,035 energy-only difference.
Assumptions and limits
Purchase price, financing, maintenance, insurance, depreciation and public-charger tariffs are outside the comparison. A negative savings number means the entered EV energy cost is higher.
Common questions
Is this total cost of ownership?
No. It compares energy costs only.
Are current energy prices fetched?
No. All prices are editable assumptions supplied by you.
