How to use the Backup Storage Calculator
Describe the exact backup set you intend to retain. The compression percentage is the remaining size, so 60% means 40% saved. All inputs use decimal gigabytes.
The calculation
Worked example
Two 1,000 GB full copies plus thirty 20 GB incrementals total 2,600 GB before compression. A 60% retained-size assumption gives 1,560 GB.
Assumptions and limits
This is not a scheduler for synthetic-full or deduplicated backup systems. Replication, metadata, version churn, recovery staging and provider billing overhead are excluded unless incorporated in your estimates.
Common questions
Does 60% mean 60% compression savings?
No. It means the compressed data retains 60% of its original size.
Does the model deduplicate full copies?
No. Each retained full copy consumes the full entered size before the common compression factor.
