How to use the Straight Stair Geometry Calculator

This convention uses the upper floor as the final landing, giving one fewer tread than risers. The total run includes only the equal-depth treads.

The calculation

Individual rise = total rise/risers; tread depth = total run/(risers−1)

Worked example

2,800 mm rise, 16 risers and 4,200 mm horizontal run give 175 mm individual rise and 280 mm tread depth.

Assumptions and limits

Descriptive geometry only. Does not check building codes, headroom, handrails, landings, structural capacity or accessibility requirements.
