How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator

Select the measurement system first because consumption and economy describe opposite relationships. In metric mode, a smaller liters-per-100-kilometers figure uses less fuel. In US mode, a larger miles-per-gallon figure uses less fuel. Enter the full distance you intend to drive; for a return journey, include both legs. Changing the system does not automatically convert the numbers you already entered.

The calculation

Metric liters = km × (L/100 km) / 100; US gallons = miles / mpg; cost = fuel × price

Worked example

A 300 km trip at 7 L/100 km uses 21 liters. At $1.50 per liter, the fuel estimate is $31.50.

Assumptions and limits

The estimate assumes constant fuel efficiency across the trip. Traffic, hills, weather, speed, load and idling can change actual consumption. Fuel economy must be positive even if the trip distance is zero. The US mode uses US gallons, not imperial gallons. Toll charges, parking, maintenance and vehicle depreciation are outside the fuel-only total.

Common questions

Is the distance one way or round trip?

It is exactly the distance entered. Double a one-way distance before entry if you want a round-trip estimate.

What happens when I switch units?

The labels change, but the values remain yours to edit. Re-enter distance, economy and price in the selected system.
