How to use the Electricity Cost Calculator

Use the average power during operation rather than assuming every appliance constantly draws its maximum rating. Enter daily operating time and the billing period you want to explore. Kilowatt-hours measure energy, whereas watts measure power at a moment or an average over operation. The result combines that energy with the per-kWh rate you provide.

The calculation

Energy(kWh) = watts/1000 × hours/day × days; cost = energy × unit price

Worked example

A 1,000-watt load used two hours daily for 30 days consumes 60 kWh. At $0.15 per kWh, the usage cost is $9.

Assumptions and limits

The model assumes constant average power and one uniform unit price. Cycling equipment may draw much less than its rated power when averaged over time. Standby usage, fixed service fees, taxes, tiered or time-of-use prices and demand charges are not automatically included. This estimates a usage component, not the complete utility bill.

Common questions

Why divide watts by 1,000?

A kilowatt is 1,000 watts. Multiplying kilowatts by hours gives kilowatt-hours.

Can I use the number printed on an appliance?

It can be a rough assumption, but rated power may not represent average consumption. A measured average is more informative.
