How to use the Work Hours Calculator

Use 24-hour time and choose whether the end occurs on the next day. The next-day setting always adds one full calendar day, even if the end clock time is later than the start. Enter only the break time you intend to deduct. The result includes both decimal hours and hours-and-minutes notation for easier comparison with time sheets.

The calculation

Net minutes = end − start + (next day ? 1440 : 0) − break

Worked example

A shift from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break contains 8 net working hours. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 with next-day end selected also spans 8 hours before breaks.

Assumptions and limits

A same-day end cannot be before the start. A break cannot exceed the gross shift duration. This model performs clock-time arithmetic rather than timestamp arithmetic; it does not handle daylight-saving transitions, employment law, overtime premiums or payroll rounding. For a 24-hour shift, choose identical clock times and next-day end. Confirm your employer’s recording convention separately.

Common questions

Does next day mean the calculator detects an overnight shift?

No. It explicitly adds 24 hours. Select it only when the end belongs to the following day.

Does this calculate overtime pay?

No. It reports net time only. Pay and overtime depend on rates, agreements and local rules.
