How to use the Pool Heating Energy Calculator

The power input is electrical consumption. COP converts it into delivered heat; a heat pump can have a COP above one under suitable conditions. Use a justified average COP for the scenario.

The calculation

Thermal kWh = volume × 1,000 × 4.1868 × temperature rise / 3,600; hours = thermal kWh/(input kW × COP)

Worked example

20 m³ warmed by 5°C needs about 116.3 kWh of thermal energy. A 5 kW electrical heater at COP 1 takes 23.26 ideal hours without losses.

Assumptions and limits

Assumes water density 1,000 kg/m³ and constant heat capacity. Heat loss, evaporation, circulation and temperature-dependent efficiency are omitted, so real heating can take longer.

Common questions

Is heater thermal output the same as electrical input?

Only at COP 1 in this model. If using thermal output directly, set COP to one and label the assumption accordingly.

Does this set a safe pool temperature?

No. Start and target temperatures are inputs, not recommendations.
