How to use the Unloaded Voltage Divider Calculator

Connect the upper resistor to the input and the lower resistor to the return reference. This model assumes the output is measured without drawing load current.

The calculation

Vout = Vin × Rlower/(Rupper + Rlower)

Worked example

12 V across 10,000 ohms above and 5,000 ohms below gives an unloaded output of 4 V.

Assumptions and limits

A load changes the equivalent lower resistance and the output. Component tolerances, resistor power ratings and input source resistance are excluded.

Common questions

Which inputs should I use?

What does the result exclude?

A load changes the equivalent lower resistance and the output. Component tolerances, resistor power ratings and input source resistance are excluded.
