How to use the Open Two-Pulley Belt Length Calculator

Enter effective belt-path diameters and the distance between shaft centers. The geometry follows straight external tangents and circular arcs around two separated pulleys.

The calculation

L = 2√[C²−(R−r)²] + π(R+r) + 2(R−r)asin[(R−r)/C]

Worked example

200 mm and 100 mm pulley diameters, 500 mm center distance give an ideal open belt length of about 1,476.2431 mm.

Assumptions and limits

Requires nonoverlapping pulleys and large diameter at least as large as the small diameter. Tension, belt thickness, groove geometry and standard purchase lengths are excluded.
