How to use the Linear Spring Energy Calculator

Measure extension or compression from the unloaded equilibrium position. A negative displacement represents compression but stores the same energy for the same magnitude.

The calculation

Energy = ½ k x²; spring-force magnitude = k |x|

Worked example

A 200 N/m ideal spring displaced 0.1 m stores 1 J and has force magnitude 20 N.

Assumptions and limits

Valid only within the linear elastic range of the entered spring. Preload, damping, yielding and nonlinear stiffness are excluded.
